Human Services

The goal of an Advocate is help break down the barriers between the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing community by providing education and awareness. The purpose of these services is to improve the quality of deaf and heard of hearing individuals' lives. The programs are listed below:

  • Advocacy
  • Community Education

What can an advocate do?

  • Advocate for you to get an interpreter for your communication needs
  • Help you understand your bills and letters.
  • Work with you to find an apartment.
  • Educate you about ADA and other laws.
  • Work with you to resolve conflicts with family, friend, co-workers.
  • Give you referrals to local business and agencies.
  • Help you schedule interpreters.
  • Help you find a school and work with the school.
  • Work with you to establish a budget.
  • Will help you understand the IEP process for your child.

We empower you by teaching you how to advocate for your self !

Employment Services

Employment services offered at GLAD assist deaf and hard of hearing individuals with job information, job training, job placement, and accessibility for the deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Our services are co-located at 5 Employment Development Department (EDD) Offices and at each local GLAD office. The programs under employment services are listed below:

ABOUT LIFESIGNS, Inc.
LIFESIGNS, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt California Corporation providing communication access to the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing Community. LIFESIGNS, Inc. provides services to the following areas: Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, Santa Barbara County, Ventura County, Antelope Valley, San Luis Obispo County, Kern County, and Inyo-Mono Counties.

Interpreting Services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. During the normal business day, interpreters are dispatched through the LIFESIGNS business office and 2 regional offices. A private answering service dispatches interpreters to after hours medical, mental health or law enforcement emergencies.

LIFESIGNS services include the following:

  • Interpreter Referral: Provide sign language interpretation in manual, oral and tactile modes for agencies, organizations and individuals 24 hours a day.
  • Communication Aids: Note takers, cued speech transliterators, assistive listening devices and referral to Real Time Captionists available upon request.
  • Document Translation: Provide translation of documents, applications, forms, etc. for consumers who are unable to understand written communication.
  • Telephone Assistance: Provide interpretation of phone calls for deaf persons who can not use the TDD
  • Individualized Requests: LIFESIGNS makes every effort to work with its consumers to meet their individual communication need(s).

Empowering Parents

Tri-County GLAD, in collaboration with Child
Development Resources, provides the
Deaf and Hard of Hearing community with an Empowering Parents Program workshop. This program was designed to provide parents with support and guidance in raising Deaf and hard of hearing children from ages 0 to 5 years old.
The curriculum includes materials to cover ages 0 to 36 months old:


• Pregnancy and Birth (Pre & postnatal
development)
• How babies grow (Physical & cognitive
development)
• Baby’s talk (Language & communication)
• Temperament
• Cooperation and discipline

Other topics include ages 3 to 5 years old:


• Listening and talking to children
• Self-esteem and encouragement
• Misbehavior, cooperation and discipline
• Social and emotional development
• Temperament
• Parenting Styles
• Self-Care for Parents
• Deafness 101—Realities & myths

These classes can be scheduled at your convenience at the Tri-County GLAD office and they are free. Sign Language, Voice and Spanish translation is provided.
Included with these workshops, a curriculum summary will be included.
